Origin Materials, Inc. (ORGN)
• Origin Materials is a pre-production provider of bio-based plastics. The medium-term addressable market is estimated at $390 billion, encompassing three categories: food and beverage packaging ($145 billion – this being the most immediate focus), apparel and carpet ($175 billion), and carbon-related applications ($70 billion).
• The first production facility is being built in Sarnia, Ontario, with startup expected in late 2022. The plant will use woody biomass as the feedstock. The second plant, in development in Geismar, Louisiana and with financing being finalized, is expected to start up in 2025.
• Origin’s partners comprise two categories: major purchasers of plastics and also chemical companies. Danone, LVMH, PepsiCo, and Nestle all have an ESG interest in reducing the carbon footprint of their supply chains. Kuraray, Mitsubishi, Mitsui, Solvay, and Stepan are collaborating with Origin on product development.
• The call should be useful for investors interested in the chemical industry; specialty biomaterials pure-plays: Amyris (AMRS), Gevo (GEVO), and especially Danimer Scientific (DNMR); plastics recycling pure-plays: Loop Industries (LOOP/Outperform – covered by RJ Ltd.) and PureCycle Technologies (PCT); and, more broadly, anyone looking at the theme of sustainability in the industrial sector.
